Facts on environmental waste
Your recycled glass cullet can be used for sand, paint additives, fibreglass reinforcement, thermal insulation and many other applications.
The UK glass industry recycled 751,845 tonnes of glass in 2006, saving enough energy to launch 10 space shuttle missions
The energy saving from recycling one glass bottle will:
- Power a 60 watt light bulb for 100 minutes
- Power a computer for 25 minutes
- Power a colour TV for 20 minutes
- Power a washing machine for 10 minutes
The oldest example of glass are Egyptian beads dating from 12,000 BC.
Glass is 100% recyclable and can be endlessly recycled with no loss in quality, purity or clarity.
1 tonnes of glass is made of 3000-4000 bottles.
We save over a ton of resources for every ton of glass recycled - 1,330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash,
433 pounds of limestone and 151 pounds of feldspar.
Avoid landfill tax by recycling more glass waste and save up to 40% on waste disposal costs.
From April 2009 the standard rate went up to £40 per tonne and will go up by £8 per tonne in April 2010 to £48 per tonne, to avoid it you need to extract recyclable materials from your waste and only dispose of what cannot economically be recycled.
